Here's another big indication showing that the work that FIRE is doing is paying off. This is the idea we were pushing with the Fair Deal Panel. Jason Kenney on protecting firearms owners.

For those of you that know me at all, know that when it comes to terminology, I am very picky and try to be precise. When it comes to terminology and the law, the definition of words is everything. Change the meaning of a word, or have a phrase that has no definition, and the meaning of legislation will be changed, or be open to interpretation. All gun owners are very aware of this when new laws are introduced.
With that in mind, I have always known that gun owners are the safest segment of society, but as the laws have become more arbitrary and stringent, I have become very uncomfortable using the phrase ”law-abiding” gun owner. With the latest round of confiscations by the liberal, it is harder and harder to be “law abiding” when we do not even know what the law is. In a lot of cases I do not think the word “legal” even fits. Using “law abiding” to describe gun owners may be a detriment as laws continue to ultimate dis-armrement. The “anti’s” will use it as a bludgeon when we disagree with their laws. If we are so “law abiding” why won’t we follow their laws when they mandate we totally disarm? Or even now as they make laws stricter, how can we be “law abiding” when we vehemently disagree with the new regulations?
Finding a new word or phrase to better describe us would help with our image as ordinary people who disagree with the current laws.
Since the firearms community is both peaceful and responsible, this is how I am going to start referring to all gun owners in the future. I am a peaceful and responsible gun owner. Are you?

FIRE is making good progress. The policy of Alberta choosing its own CFO had its beginning almost 10 years ago, when it was conceived and brought to fruition when the, then, Wildrose party of Alberta , adopted the policy almost unanimously at their policy convention in November of 2015. When the Wildrose merged with the Conservatives to form the United Conservative Party , all policies had to be started from scratch. Since this time, FIRE has been working consistently and diligently to make sure this gun policy was adopted. A lot of time and effort was put into revamping the policy and finding enthusiastic support within the UCP and its riding associations. The UCP set up a ‘Fair Deal Panel’ to look for ways to fire wall Alberta against the intrusions of Ottawa. Again, we were at these meetings to fight for the rights of gun owners in Alberta by pushing for the Province to elect our own CFO, and recover power from Ottawa. While doing this ground work with the Fair Deal Panel and working with Constituency Associations, we made some great allies, Mark Smith MLA, Drew Barnes MLA, and Jason Nixon MLA,House Leader, to name a few. A big thanks to these MLA’s, for without their support, we may not have the success we do. Jason Nixon brought forward a motion that paved the way for further gains by introducing a pro-gun motion in the Legislature.

On May 8 Jason Nixon again stood up in the Alberta legislature to announce another motion that put the process of acquiring our own CFO in motion.

We will be continuing our progress with meetings with the Minister of Justice, and keeping the process on track.

The fight over legal gun ownership and gun rights is mainly conducted at the Federal level so with the election of Justin Trudeau and the Liberals, what does this mean for gun owners?
Todd Brown has been involved with a number of gun rights groups. He recently started a new group, Firearms Institute for Rational Education (FIRE), that aims to educate people about current laws in order to better assist them in advocating for gun friendly laws. The group started in August and has already had its first success when Alberta's Wildrose Party adapted policy that will be helpful for law-abiding, legal gun owners. Listen in to our interview and check-out the FIRE website here. |

I have some good news to report, and I need to ask for the support of this group....I was sent an e-mail from STANDING SENATE COMMITTEE ON LEGAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL AFFAIRS to speak to the senate committee on bill C-42. I have graciously accepted the invitation, but I now have a timeline of 1 week(or less) to put everything together. I would now ask for some financial support to help get me to Ottawa. Members from the Libertarian Party have already stepped up to the plate, and I want to thank Cory and James for their help. I will also use this opportunity to solidify the contacts I already have there, and to make as many new contacts as I can to further the opportunities that are opening up to me. Pm me if you wish to help out, and I will keep you updated as much as I can. - Todd Brown
